Crazy Elk Charges Buffalo!

ESPN - Bison-elk encounter caught on video:

Saw this today on Myspace.

I've never seen an elk charge a buffalo before!

"As best Ken can surmise, the bison was protecting food and the elk came in just wanting a fight.

'The buffalo was hanging out at a food plot,' he said. 'A big ole knarly buffalo with an attitude, but if you leave him alone, he's fine. I've been around buffalo a lot, but I don't think they interact like this.

'Now this elk is crazy. They can really act goofy. He had like five or six cows behind him and must have thought, 'I'll show off for the girls.' He thought he was a king daddy of the place until that buffalo stood his ground.'

Both animals lowered their heads and went to butting. The elk, with antlers jutting about four feet from its skull, could only fend off the massive buffalo for a short bit before getting pushed back and turning tail.

'I don't think he could hurt that buffalo unless he poked him in the eye,' Ken said. 'Buffalo bang heads a lot.'

Cook said the elk wasn't in the rut and really wasn't after the buffalo's food.

'I don't think he was really interested in the food as it was a territorial deal,' he said. 'He was wanting to fight somebody and didn't have anybody else up to his size.'

When the standoff began, Tammy grabbed their digital camera to catch the action and Ken grabbed a still camera.

'We keep it pretty close,' Ken said. 'Fortunately it was charged up and we had a tape in it. The sound is the interesting part of the video. We were sitting looking out our kitchen window.'"
