Hunting - Is it in trouble?

George Rowe tells the truth about the decline in the number of hunters as a whole. I've included part of his article below...

He's talking about the specifics to the state of Michigan, however, I've heard this is happening all over the US.

Get your kids outside and involved with outdoor pursuits such as hunting or fishing. Inactivity is largely a part why so many kids these days are overweight.

Take a kid hunting today!

Petoskey News-Review: "Hunter numbers we are often told are shrinking and the hunter population is aging. As a result, this great outdoor sport is said to be in some trouble with an uncertain future. At the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association meeting over the weekend, we learned a few things about this question and a few myths were erased.

Seargent Kevin Davis of the Department of Natural Resources was on of the speakers at our afternoon newsmakers session. This Conservation Officer is the Field Coordinator of the Hunter Education program for the entire state. Sgt. Davis is based in Traverse City, but covers the whole state - spending a great deal of his work time on the road.

One of the first things he cleared up was the fact hunter numbers are not shrinking. We still have huge numbers of hunters in this outdoor state and their numbers are being added to every year as new, younger people get trained and buy their first licenses. The percentage of the population that hunts, however, is shrinking, and that is a problem.

Getting more young people involved is part of the solution and many groups are working on that. It is generally conceded that things like computer games, school team sports and so forth compete effectively with the outdoors, especially if the parents or uncles or grandparents are not outdoors-oriented. Kids definitely need a start to get in gear with the outdoors. "

Bow Hunting - Mule Deer Ambush Secrets!

I just saw this article about Dan Simmons' experience hunting whitetail deer in Nevada. He provides a lot of great tips that work for both bow hunting and rifle.

Thanks for posting the article Dan. Great Advice!

Pahrump Valley Times - Nye County's Largest Newspaper Circulation: "This is a hunter's story, a story of planning, preparation, travel, and action - not the action of television, books or video games, but of doing it right.

We've all received our Nevada hunting draw tags now or we haven't. Whichever the case, summer is here, fall is coming, and we need to prepare for the hunt.

My hunting pal, Roy Keefer, is in Alaska already, and has begun his season early. I'm sure he is going to bring back some exciting stories and I'll be interested to see if he will also get to hunt in Nevada this fall.

He shared this story with me; I'll share it with you, and trust we'll both be inspired by this tale.

'Recently,' writes Keefer, 'the mailman came to our house and left me with bad news.

'I didn't get drawn for anything in Nevada. No big game licenses at all. Zip, zero, nada. I suppose if there's any consolation it's knowing that I'm not by myself. Others share my grief and misfortune. That's one of the reasons I always plan trips outside of Nevada, so I won't be left without a hunt in the fall.

'Despite my bad luck, I thought I would share with you how I hunt mule deer. These big-eared rascals are fun to hunt with a bow, but these techniques will work for rifle as well.

'If hunting in an agricultural area, try to set up ambush spots near the fields to surprise deer as they come into the fields to eat. It's best to set up a distance from the fields on trails they use going to and from their beds.

'This can be touchy if they bed close by. This is pretty much an evening hunt since it's very tough to go near the fields in the morning without being seen or heard. Going to your spot in the daylight gives you a better chance o"
